Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA) are the first of their kind of awards and emerged as the most respectable market-led awards in Islamic banking and finance. GIFA is based on an objective proprietary methodology developed by Edbiz Consulting, these awards recognize and celebrate success and contributions of individuals and institutions in the Islamic financial services Industry.
The objective of GIFA is to highlight the best practices in Islamic banking and finance and celebrate success of governments, institutions and individuals in Islamic banking and finance, with an ultimate objective of promoting social responsibility, adherence to Shari’a authenticity and commitment to Islamic banking and finance.
Each year, GIFA nominations are announced in the first and second quarter and remain open till the end of the second quarter of the year. The nominees are requested to send in relevant documents, highlighting their performance, objectives in line with GIFA. This is followed by detailed independent research work by the GIFA team and deliberations of the GIFA awards committee before the winners are announced.
The inaugural GIFA ceremony was held on 17th December, 2011 at the Oman Islamic Economic Forum (OIEF). Tun Abdullah Badawi, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia attended as Chief Guest and received the Global Leadership in Islamic Finance Award at a prestigious ceremony. GIFA 2012 was organized on 19th November, 2012, in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia where HRH Dr Nazrin Shah, Sultan of State of Perak, Malaysia, was honored with the Global Leadership in Islamic Finance Award. GIFA 2013 ceremony was held on the 26th November, 2013 in conjunction with 5th World Islamic Retail Banking Conference (WIRBC) in Dubai which was attended by a large number of Islamic bankers and practitioners of Islamic finance from around the world. The top award, Global Leadership in Islamic Finance 2013, was given to His Excellency. Shaukat Aziz, Former Prime minister of Pakistan. GIFA 2014 was organized in Dubai, which was attended by practitioners, leaders and government officials from different parts of the world. Two top awards in GIFA 2014, Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award was presented to His Excellency Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Republic of Kazakhstan, for his outstanding support to Islamic banking and finance in his country. The Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award (Country Award) was presented to Malaysia and was received by Dato’ Sri Najib Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia for the role played by Malaysia in promoting the global Islamic financial services industry.
Fifth Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA) ceremony was held at Gulf Convention Centre, Manama, Bahrain in the evening of 28th September 2015. Like previous years, the awards ceremony was attended by a great number of Islamic banking and finance professionals from around the world. HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, Nigeria, was the guest of honour, who was presented with the prestigious top award – Global Islamic Finance Leadership Awards – for his advocacy for Islamic banking in Nigeria and his leadership role in promoting ethics and social responsibility in Islamic banking and finance. The Ambassadors of the UK, Malaysia and Pakistan were among the high-profiled dignitaries.
GIFA 2016 are scheduled to take place in last quarter of 2016 and nominations are open now till the end of second quarter.
